How Hip Hop Came to Germany
1 season available
Stationed U.S. soldiers in the Rhine-Main area bring hip hop to the whole of Germany, with New Yorker Rico Sparx bringing the scene to life. The rapping is in English. Hip Hop is multicultural, solidary and offers a home to many. D-Flame, IZ from Konkret Finn or Moses Pelham, among others, remember these first hours...
Early 90s: Hip hop is political and the message is spread in German. In Frankfurt, the Rödelheim Hartreim project, among others, makes headlines. But with the Fantastischen Vier, four German guys from outside the scene emerge and celebrate enormous success. Azad, Sido, Moses Pelham, Celo & Abdi and Jeyz, among others, tell the story of how hip hop rapidly becomes so big.
In 2000, a new era in hip hop begins with Azad. It's about poverty, integration, sex, drugs and violence. In Berlin, Aggro Berlin made headlines. The rappers see themselves as outlaws who hold up a mirror to society with their music. But the image of evil brings hip hop down. Sido, Azad, Bazzazian, Chima or Murat Güngör, among others, tell how this happened.
With Haftbefehl, gangster rap reaches a new hype from 2010. Hip hop becomes Germany's most successful music genre. And more and more women have made a name for themselves. Arabic, Turkish, Kurdish or French words are rapped. Hip Hop shows: That's Germany! Narrated by Haftbefehl, LIZ, Josi, Dù Maroc, Azzi Memo and many more.
Azad, Sido, Moses Pelham, Haftbefehl, Sabrina Setlur, Liz and many more talk about who made them what they are and what it means to live Hip Hop. Thanks to them, Deutschrap has developed into the most successful music genre in Germany over the past four decades.
